Ultum Nature Systems Controsoil is a premium aquarium soil from Japan, crafted using natural soil and volcanic ash. The right substrate is critical for a successful planted aquarium, as it not only helps aquarium plants thrive but also buffers water to the ideal levels for fish and shrimp.

Controsoil by UNS is specifically designed to maintain a pH level below 7, making it perfect for Caridina shrimp and most tropical fish. Unlike many other aquarium soils that can lead to "new tank syndrome," Controsoil ensures a smoother setup with fewer algae spikes and ammonia-related issues.

Why Choose Controsoil?

Many aquarium soils contain ammonia (NH3) which can cause high spikes and algal blooms in the first few weeks of a new tank setup. This is known as new tank syndrome, where algae overgrowth, cloudiness, and smelly water can occur. Controsoil reduces the chances of this happening by preventing excessive ammonia release, allowing a quicker tank stabilization. In fact, many users report successfully adding shrimp or fish within 24 hours of setting up their tank. However, we recommend cycling the tank first and ensuring ammonia and nitrite levels are at 0 before introducing any aquatic life.

How Much Soil Do I Need?

To calculate the amount of Controsoil you need for your tank:

Length x Width x Desired Substrate Height (in inches) ÷ 60 = Liters of soil needed

Available Granule Sizes & Applications:

• Normal Granules (5mm) – Ideal for larger tanks (20 gallons or above) with larger plants.

• Fine Granules (3mm) – Perfect for smaller planted tanks (less than 20 gallons). Can also be used as a top coat over medium granules for small root plants, such as Hemianthus Callitrichoides, to anchor more easily and prevent floating.

• Extra Fine Granules (1mm) – Best for small planted tanks (less than 20 gallons) or as a topcoat for medium and fine granules. This size aids in securing small root plants and preventing floating during tank filling.
