About this item

Ultum Nature Systems Controbase

Nutrient-Rich Base Substrate for Planted Aquariums

Ultum Nature Systems Controbase is a highly porous, nutrient-rich base substrate designed to support heavy root-feeding aquatic plants. Made from pumice stone infused with slow-releasing nutrients like Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus, and trace elements, Controbase helps regulate excess nutrients, improve plant vitality, and cultivate beneficial bacteria.

Its larger 6-8mm granule size enhances water flow and oxygenation, ensuring a healthy and balanced aquarium environment.

Key Features & Benefits

Pre-Bagged in Mesh Filter Bags – Comes ready to use for easy placement and removal. Simply place the mesh bags in your aquarium without opening.
Nutrient-Rich Formula – Infused with slow-releasing essential nutrients, lasting approximately three months before requiring replacement.
Improves Water Circulation & Beneficial Bacteria Growth – The highly porous structure promotes better oxygenation and a stronger biological filtration system.
Customizable for Aquascaping – Controbase can be stacked to create slope variations for an enhanced aquascape design.
Ideal Pairing with Controsoil or Controsand – Designed to be layered underneath your preferred aquarium substrate for optimal plant growth and nutrient absorption.

How to Use

  • Do Not Wash – Use as is, straight from the bag.

  • Spread Evenly – Place the mesh bags at the bottom of the aquarium before adding the top substrate.

  • Layer at Least 2 Inches of Substrate – Ensure a minimum of 2 inches of Controsoil, Controsand, or gravel is placed on top.

Beautiful addition to my reef!

The fish arrived in perfect condition. Packaging was triple insulated with heat packs. Acclimation was smooth and it was eating frozen mysis within 2 hours of introduction. AquaEditorial never disappoints.

Good but picky eater

Beautiful specimen, arrived healthy. Takes a while to adjust to new food but eventually started eating pellets. Great addition to my South American cichlid tank.

FAQs

Emily R.·2 days ago

What temperature should I keep the tank at for this fish?

Betta USASeller·replied

Great question! We recommend maintaining a water temperature of 82–86°F (28–30°C). Discus are tropical fish and thrive in warm, stable water conditions. A reliable heater with a thermostat is essential.

Can I keep this with other fish in a community tank?

Betta USASeller·replied

Yes! Discus are peaceful and social. They do best with calm tank mates like Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, and Corydoras Catfish. Avoid aggressive or fast-moving fish that may stress them.

Sarah L.·1 week ago

What size tank do I need for a small group?

Betta USASeller·replied

We recommend a minimum of 55 gallons for a small group of discus. They need spacious aquariums with open swimming areas, live plants, driftwood, and gentle filtration.

David K.·1 week ago

What should I feed them?

Betta USASeller·replied

Discus are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet. We recommend high-quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and beef heart mixes. A varied diet helps maintain vibrant coloration.
